Industrial Hygiene

Many commercial and industrial facilities are faced with problems of Poor Indoor Air Quality.  Poor ventilation and/or excessive emissions have been known to lead to suspected headaches, nausea, and general respiratory tract irritation, leading to decreased productivity.   However, in most cases building occupants experience symptoms that do not fit the pattern of any particular illness and are difficult to trace to any specific source. This phenomenon has been labeled 'Sick Building Syndrome'. People may complain of one or more of the following symptoms: dry or burning mucous membranes in the nose, eyes and throat; sneezing; stuffy or runny nose; fatigue or lethargy; headache; dizziness; nausea; irritability and forgetfulness. Poor lighting, noise, vibration, thermal discomfort and psychological stress may also cause, or contribute to, these symptoms.

To assess the complexity and typically nonspecific complaints/illnesses identified in many commercial and industrial facilities, VERTEX utilizes our vast knowledge Industrial Hygiene practices and expertise to provide our client with comprehensive assessments that include:

  • Inspection of the structure (both interior and exterior) with emphasis on ventilation systems and overall building conditions
  • Thorough inspection and evaluation of ventilation systems, and air flow patterns
  • Employee interviews and review of health records
  • Inspection of hazardous chemical usage and storage practices
  • Air sampling for biological aerosols, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other potential irritants and pollutants
  • Utilization of environmental monitoring and analytical methods to calculate exposure
  • Recommend engineering, work practice controls, and other methods to control potential health hazards

Based on the investigation findings, VERTEX can also provide the following:

  • Written specifications for, and oversee implementation of, required corrective action
  • Expert witness testimony
  • Supply required right-to-know information to employees
